Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
Each year about one out of 4,344 babies in the United States are born with this syndrome. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is the underdevelopment of the left side of the heart. The left ventricle is absent or nonfunctional and there is a hypoplastic ascending aorta. Initial survival depends on Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and an open foramen ovale.

Diagnosis
The most common test doctors use to diagnose hypoplastic left heart syndrome is an echocardiogram. Treatment
The prognosis is poor without surgical intervention which is a heart transplant. Even after surgical repair, children are at increased risk of infection involving the heart and it's valves. They may need to take antibiotics prophylactically before certain dental and surgical procedures. |
